NF high voltage PTC coolant heater helps to solve the pain point of battery heating

For the power battery of electric vehicles, at low temperature, the activity of lithium ions is greatly reduced, and at the same time, the viscosity of the electrolyte increases sharply. As a result, the performance of the battery will decline significantly, and it will also affect the life of the battery. Therefore, heating the battery pack is very important. At present, many new energy vehicles are only equipped with battery cooling systems, while ignoring the heating system.

At present, the mainstream battery pack heating methods are mainly heat pump and Ptc Coolant Heater . From the perspective of OEMs, various options are different: For example, the battery pack of Tesla Model S is heated by resistance wire with high energy consumption. In order to save precious electric energy, Tesla canceled the resistance on Model 3. The wires are heated, which in turn heats the battery with waste heat from the electric motor and electronic power system. The battery heating system using 50% water + 50% ethylene glycol as the medium is currently welcomed by major automobile manufacturers, and many new projects are in the preparatory stage before mass production.

There are also models that use heat pump heating. However, when the ambient temperature is low, the heat pump has a low heat transfer capacity and cannot quickly heat up. Therefore, at present, for OEMs, the high voltage liquid heating solution is the solution to the pain point of battery heating in winter first choice.

NF high pressure PTC cooler heater (HVCH)

The new high voltage PTC coolant heater features an ultra-compact modular design with high thermal power density. Low thermal mass and high efficiency with fast response time provide comfortable cabin temperatures for hybrid and electric vehicles. Its package size and weight are reduced, and its service life is long: the rear film heating element has a service life of 15,000 hours or more; the power supply is highly flexible and designed with a coolant switch-on; 800 V fast charging is also available as an option.

In September 2018, relying on its rich experience in the field of electric vehicle thermal management solutions, NF received a large-scale order for high-pressure liquid heaters from a leading European car manufacturer and a major Asian car manufacturer. The order has already started production in 2020.
