NF High Voltage Liquid Heater Save EV Battery Life

For the power battery of electric vehicles, the activity of lithium ions decreases dramatically at low temperatures. At the same time, the viscosity of electrolyte increases sharply. In this way, the performance of the battery will decline significantly, and it will also affect the battery life. Therefore, the heating of the battery pack is very important. At present, many new energy vehicles are only equipped with battery cooling system, but ignore the battery heating system.
At present, the mainstream battery heater method is mainly heat pump and high voltage liquid heater. From the perspective of the OEM, various options vary: for example, the Tesla Model S battery pack uses a high energy consumption resistance wire heating, in order to save valuable electrical energy, Tesla eliminated resistance wire heating on the Model 3, and instead used the waste heat from the motor and electronic power system to heat the battery. The battery heating system using 50% water + 50% glycol as the medium is now popular with major automakers and there are more new projects in the pre-production preparation stage. There are also models that use heat pumps for heating, but the heat pump has a low capacity to move heat when the ambient temperature is low, and cannot heat up quickly. Therefore, at present, for vehicle manufacturers, high voltage coolant heater solution is the first choice to solve the pain point of winter battery heating.

The new high voltage liquid heater adopts ultra-compact modular design, high thermal power density. Low thermal mass and high efficiency with fast response time provide comfortable cabin temperature for hybrid and electric vehicles. Its package size and weight are reduced and its service life is long. The rear film heating element has a service life of 15,000 hours or more. The technology has been developed to meet the demand for thermal management in high-performance systems that generate heat rapidly. The battery thermal management system of current and future vehicles will gradually be separated from the internal combustion engine, mostly in hybrid vehicles, until it is completely separated in pure electric vehicles. Minimal power loss is achieved because the heating element of the high voltage liquid heater is completely submerged in the coolant. This technology improves battery energy performance by maintaining a balanced temperature in the battery pack and inside the battery. The high voltage liquid heater has a low thermal mass, resulting in a very high thermal power density and fast response time with less battery consumption, thus extending the range of the vehicle battery. In addition, the technology supports direct temperature sensing capabilities.
