Scroll Air Compressor: Principle, Structure, and Advantages

A scroll air compressor operates through the relative orbital motion of a fixed and an orbiting scroll. Air is trapped in crescent-shaped compression chambers, progressively compressed, and continuously discharged from the center, achieving smooth and efficient gas compression.

Basic Structure

The scroll air compressor primarily consists of an orbiting scroll and a fixed scroll, assembled with a 180° phase offset. The orbiting scroll is driven by an eccentric shaft and moves in a small-radius orbit around the fixed scroll, guided by an anti-rotation mechanism. The fixed scroll is mounted on the frame, forming a series of crescent-shaped compression chambers. Air is drawn in through a filter from the periphery of the fixed scroll and enters the compression chambers.

Working Principle

1. Intake Phase: 

As the orbiting scroll rotates around the center of the fixed scroll, the peripheral compression chambers open to the intake port, drawing air inside.

2. Compression Phase: 

During the orbital motion, the air is sealed within the crescent-shaped chambers. The chamber volume gradually decreases, steadily increasing the air pressure and enabling continuous compression.

3. Discharge Phase: 

Compressed air is discharged through an axial port at the center of the fixed scroll, producing a smooth, continuous airflow. Throughout the process, intake, compression, and discharge occur simultaneously, eliminating the pulsation found in traditional reciprocating compressors.
