Definition & Working Principle

An electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) pump is a component that combines an electric motor and a hydraulic pump to provide power assistance for vehicle steering systems. Unlike traditional hydraulic steering pumps (driven by the engine’s crankshaft), EHPS pumps are powered by the vehicle’s electrical system, allowing independent operation.
 
  • Working Process:
    • The electric motor drives the hydraulic pump to generate pressure.
    • Hydraulic fluid is delivered to the steering gear, which amplifies the driver’s steering force, making steering lighter.
    • A control unit adjusts the motor’s speed (and thus the pump’s output) based on factors like steering wheel speed, vehicle speed, and driver input, ensuring optimal assistance.

  • Electric Motor: Typically a brushless DC motor for high efficiency and durability.
  • Hydraulic Pump: Generates pressure; designs include vane pumps, gear pumps, or axial piston pumps.

Flexible layout: No need to align with the engine crankshaft pulley, allowing for more freedom in placement within the engine compartment.

Compatibility and Transition: Highly suitable for hybrid vehicles. It can still provide stable steering assistance during engine auto-stop and start or pure electric driving.

Laying the groundwork for autonomous driving: Its electronic control characteristics are more conducive to integration with advanced driver assistance systems, enabling automatic steering control.
