An electric coolant heater for EV is a crucial component in electric vehicles, mainly used for battery thermal management and cabin heating. The following is a detailed introduction:

Working Principle

  • PTC Heating Principle: Some EV electric coolant heaters use PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heating elements. When the air - conditioning heating mode is turned on, the PTC heating spiral is energized by high - voltage electricity to heat the coolant. The electric water pump starts, and the heated coolant flows into the warm air inlet pipe and exchanges heat through the warm air core. The air - conditioning controller controls the blower to blow air, so that the air exchanges heat with the warm air core, and then hot air is blown out to heat the cabin.
  • Resistance Wire Heating Principle: There is also an immersion - type coolant resistance heater, which uses resistance wires, such as iron - chromium - aluminum alloy resistance wires, to directly heat the insulating cooling oil or coolant. The resistance wires can be designed in a spiral shape or an inner - outer double - loop shape to increase the heat - exchange area. The coolant flows through the inside of the resistance wires, and the heat generated by the resistance wires is directly transferred to the coolant, realizing rapid heating.

Product Features

Main Features

  • High Efficiency: Immersion-type coolant resistance heaters achieve up to 98% thermal efficiency—surpassing conventional PTC heaters in electrothermal conversion efficiency. For instance, at a coolant flow rate of 10 L/min, the resistance-wire heater attains 96.5% efficiency; efficiency increases further with higher flow rates.
  • Rapid Heating Response: Under identical input power and a coolant flow rate of 10 L/min, immersion-type resistance heaters reach target temperature in 60 seconds—20% faster than conventional PTC heaters, which require 75 seconds.
  • Precise Temperature Control: Integrated electronic control enables continuous (infinite-step) modulation of heat output. Control strategies include outlet coolant temperature regulation, maximum power limitation, and maximum heat output capping, with resolution as fine as 1%.
  • Compact Integration: The unit features a compact, lightweight design optimized for seamless integration into existing vehicle cooling architectures.
