PTC Air Heater Description
The CAN-controlled PTC air heater is an intelligent thermal management device purpose-built for hybrid and electric vehicles. It provides rapid, efficient, and safe cabin heating when engine waste heat is unavailable, directly addressing the heating needs of electrified powertrains. The system revolves around two core components: PTC heating elements and a CAN bus control network. PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) ceramics have a distinctive self-limiting behavior—their electrical resistance rises sharply with increasing temperature. At low temperatures, the low resistance permits a large current to flow, delivering instant and powerful heating. As the element warms, resistance increases, automatically reducing current and heat output, which inherently prevents overheating without external intervention.
The CAN interface connects the PTC heater to the vehicle's ECU network, enabling two-way communication. It receives command messages from the vehicle controller (VCU) or HVAC module, specifying desired temperature and power levels. Simultaneously, it transmits feedback on operating parameters—such as actual power consumption, current draw, and element temperature—along with diagnostic trouble codes for overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, sensor faults, or communication timeouts. This real-time data supports accurate system monitoring and predictive maintenance.
Precision control is achieved through pulse-width modulation (PWM). The built-in microcontroller interprets CAN commands and generates a signal that drives high-speed power switches. By varying the duty cycle—the ratio of on-time to off-time—the average current through the PTC element is finely adjusted, enabling stepless linear regulation of heating power.
