The electric-hydraulic power steering pump is the core power component of the electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) system; acting as the "heart" of the entire system, it replaces the engine-belt-driven mechanical pump found in traditional hydraulic steering systems with an electric motor.
Its primary function is to convert the mechanical energy of the electric motor into hydraulic energy, supplying high-pressure fluid to the steering system to drive the power steering cylinder and provide steering assistance. The key distinction from traditional mechanical hydraulic pumps is that it operates independently of the engine, is driven directly by an electric motor, and is regulated on demand by an electronic control unit (ECU).
